It is extremely important that you are aware of the information that is included in your credit report. Even more so when today this information is used for many other things besides obtaining credit. Potential employers, insurance companies, and rental companies often use this information to determine your risk level when dealing with you.
If you have applied for credit or employment and it is denied, you have the right by law to obtain a copy of the credit report used to make this decision. You must apply for this within thirty (30) days after receiving the denial notice. The denial notice must have the name and phone number of the company from which the adverse information was obtained. In addition, you are entitled to a copy of your credit report if you are unemployed and/or receive assistance from the federal government.
You can also get your credit report directly from one of three major credit bureaus:
- Equifax (787) 751-0291 or 1-800-685-1111
- Trans Union (787) 729-9494 or 1-800-916-8800
- Experian 1-800-682-7654
What is a Credit Report Analysis?
The credit report is an essential document that summarizes your financial history. It includes information about loans, credit cards, payments made, and any defaults. This report is used by banks, credit unions, and other lenders to assess your ability to repay and make decisions about credit approval. Understanding how it works and what your report contains is key to maintaining good financial health.
Checking your credit report regularly is a best practice for all consumers. This review allows you to spot errors, prevent fraud, and understand how your financial decisions affect your credit score. A clean and accurate track record can open doors to better interest rates and financial opportunities.
In Puerto Rico, you can request your free credit report once a year through AnnualCreditReport.com, or directly with the credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian , and TransUnion. This right is protected by law, and it's a valuable tool for maintaining control over your financial information.
If you review your report and find errors, you have the right to dispute the incorrect information. Credit bureaus are required to investigate and correct any inaccuracies within a reasonable timeframe. This process can help you improve your score and avoid negative consequences on future credit applications.
